Year: 2024

Dimensions: variable

Materials: grandmother’s fabrics, thread, cushions, mat

Rearranging my late grandmother’s floral pillowcases, patterned bedsheets and curtain fabrics, to create a space for resting, playing and sharing. This was to re-invoke the safe haven held in my childhood relationship and memories with her. Despite the signs of wear and tear, these are all precious materials to me; in their ability to ground my remembering in the physical world. But these are also the kind of belongings that usually get discarded without a second thought, when clearing out the uninhabited spaces left behind.

Of course, space and storage is a luxury, and it is not one that we are all afforded. I hope that the people who interact with this work are reminded of and warmed by their own memories of their loved ones who sheltered them when they were young. The trajectories of our stories and histories, although unique and individual, trace shared experiences and emotions. In the end we are not so different and we should be comforted by the fact.
