like a thousand cranes

Year: 2024

Dimensions: 145 x 65 x 45 cm

Materials: Mother’s suitcase, drying rack, immigration cards, thread

My mother emigrated from China in the 1980s and within this suitcase contained all of the belongings she could bring. Despite the unknowns, she believed that if she could return with two full suitcases, she would have been successful.

Where the domestic reality grounds wishful thinking, I strung up the Chinese immigration cards which categorise us as foreigners, to articulate the hopes of bridging the gap between the land of my upbringing and that of my ancestral home. Yet the desire to harmonise multiple cultures amidst rising and conflicting geopolitical tensions, often falls short against the binary nature of bureaucracy.
