This work is an initial experiment around the idea that each Chinese character has been composed to fit neatly into a square template, and this is most obvious when beginners practice using gridded exercise books. Taking the perspective that these neat boxes are also representative of the typical, patriarchal nature of the language and culture, I wanted to explore alternative possibilities. In this instance, looking at the female radial 女, I was interested in the idea of tessellation and the use of Penrose tiling to reflect a different, non-linear way in which the language could be observed.
